3 Things You Need to Have a Successful Dance Career

“One of the lessons that I grew up with was to always stay true to yourself and never let what somebody else says distract you from your goals. And so when I hear about negative and false attacks, I really don’t invest any energy in them, because I know who I am.” ~ Michelle Obama
Happy Tuesday sweetie pies! I hope your week is off to a great start! I often times get asked by students or others about my dance journey as well as different dance tips. One of which I got asked recently was “What do I need in order to have a thriving and longing dance career?” Now even though this isn’t a question I get often; I feel like my response could be of value since I teach, judge and perform currently. If you’re interested in this post, then check out the ultimate 3 things you need (in my opinion) to have a successful dance career.
Work Ethic
While this may sound like a given, you wouldn’t believe how many dancers aren’t prepared for the work. I am talking long rehearsals, early call times, last minute changes, the toll it can take on your body – it can be a lot if you are not mentally prepared. You have to have a great work ethic and discipline to push through and make it happen. Most don’t care about your circumstances, but about whether or not you can perform. Besides work ethic keeps going once talent runs out. Someone with a great work ethic will last longer in the industry over someone who just has sheer talent.
Self Assurance
In this industry, you will hear a lot of “no’s”. You have to know who you are as an artist so that you not only maintain your confidence but that you also won’t be taken advantage of. Please know and understand that everyone will not see the value in you. It sounds harsh but it’s the truth. You have to know your worth and be willing to be your biggest advocate. Unless you are signed to an agency, you are responsible for making sure you get legitimate contracts and your pay. Plus it never hurts to know how things work – regardless of whether or not you have an agent.
Well versed in multiple (if not all) dance styles
I firmly believe to have longevity in this industry is that you need to be a diverse dancer. There’s nothing wrong with having a specialty or a favorite style of dance – but train in as many styles as possible. No one likes a one trick pony. True you may find work if you are just a hip hop dancer but you will continuously keep work the more you can do. Plus a lot of professional gigs are looking for dancers who can do it all. Make yourself invaluable. Learn and train as much as you can and as often as you can. This industry is continuously evolving and you have to be prepared to evolve with it.
Once again these opinions are solely mine and based on my experience thus far as a dancer. If you have any additional tips, feel free to share in the comments below! I would love to hear from you!
As always, XO and Stay FAB! ~ Stormie J
